Lake
Huites (pronounced Wee-Tez), also called "Presa Louis
Donaldo Colosio Murrieta", often has been described
as one of the world's top Trophy Bass lakes and the
most productive bass fishing lake in Mexico. The International
Game & Fish Association recently ranked Lake Huites
as the #1 bass lake in Mexico based on documented
largemouth bass weight. That's tough billing to live
up to but, by all indications, this prestigious designation
is well deserved.
Hundreds
of bass over 10 pounds have been caught and released
at this great new lake! Once called the "Mystery
Lake", scenic Lake Huites is tucked away in
western Mexico's Sierra Madres approximately
100 miles from the city of Los Mochis, Sinaloa (which
is the closest major city offering full service
airport facilities). Lake Huites has over 100 miles
of shoreline and contains 30,000 acres when at full
pool in the fall. Sitting at 4,500 feet above sea
level, Lake Huites was created by damming the Rio
Chinipa and El Fuerte rivers systems. Construction
on the dam was started in 1992 and completed in
1995. When the dam was finished, subsequent stockings
with pure Florida Strain Largemouth Bass have created
a Bass Factory that has surpassed the expectations
of any new lake in the world.
The
bass are growing at a rate of 2 pounds per year
on a protein rich diet of tilapia, shad and crayfish.
The huge forage base and diverse structure that
exists within the impoundment has the potential
to produce the next World Record. The average Bass
in this young lake is already around 4 to 5 pounds,
and it's not uncommon for experienced anglers to
have catch rates of 100 to 300 bass per day per
boat with bass weighing anywhere from 2 to 14 pounds.
One good thing Lake Huites has in its favor is that
not many drive-in boaters from the States or Mexico
fish the water. Also, the commercial netting has
some good restrictions and enforcement which limits
the netting of these monster bass. In fact, there
are no nets allowed at Huites between April and
October! That fact in itself will insure many years
of Super Bassin' at this great new lake!
The
current lake record stands at a whopping 16 pounds
1 ounce caught in early 2005! The bass was released
and is still lurking in the timber filled cove where
she was caught because Lake Huites is a "Catch and
Release" lake. This practice has paid off big time
at this lake and every other lake where this practice
is enforced. I am sure you are wondering what to
do when you reel in the fish of a lifetime during
your trip to Lake Huites and want to be able to
show off your Trophy when you get home but you have
to release the fish back into the lake. As at all
catch and release lakes, anglers simply take a photo
of their trophy, weigh the fish, and measure the
length and girth. Then, slip the bass back in the
water to live and grow. Once you do that, Mexican
Outdoor Adventures can have a replica of your fish
mounted for you by some of the best Taxidermists
in the U.S.A. They are guaranteed for life and they
look like they just swam out of the water!
No matter what time of the season you decide to
fish Lake Huites, it will be a trip you will not
forget for a long, long time!
- Early October until December, the bass at this
pristine lake will hit almost anything you throw
at them from top water action beyond belief, to
working the humps with worms, lizards and everything
in between.
- January into February the bass begin to make
the move into their pre-spawn mood, this is when
spinnerbaits usually rule. Crankbaits and plastics
also do well at this time.
- March is the classic spawn, when the Big Girls,
busting with eggs, move shallow and are willing
to hit most anything that is worked slow and deliberate.
- During April, May and June, the angler can
expect to get into some good numbers and really
Big Fish in the post spawn by slow rolling a big
Spinnerbait and digging a crankbait on the bottom
in deep water.
There is nothing on earth like sinking the barb
into a really World Class Bass and Lake Huites is
just the place to experience Explosive Bassin'
any time of the year! When is the last time you
caught a Bass that weighed in the double digits?
Well, fishing at Lake Huites is the chance of a
lifetime to get that wall-hanger you have been waiting
for.
